It's important to be mindful of your security when navigating the digital world. Here are six tips for safe online behavior:

  1. Stay updated on scammers' methods
Scammers are constantly developing new ways to deceive people. It’s important to stay informed about the best ways to protect yourself. You can do this by searching for information on "IT security" online, reading news about cybersecurity, or attending courses and seminars on the topic in your local area.

  2. Verify the sender
If you receive an SMS or email from an unknown sender or one asking you to click on links or provide information, always verify the sender's authenticity. Be especially cautious if the message involves sensitive information like logins, bank details, or ID. No bank, government authority, or company will ask you to provide such information through links in an email or SMS. They will always ask you to log in via their official channels, often using MitID. If you’re unsure, contact the sender directly using their official contact information.

  3. Passwords
One of the most important things you can do to protect yourself online is to use strong and unique passwords. Avoid reusing the same password across multiple services, and change your passwords regularly. When creating a password, make it long and unpredictable—avoid using personal information like birthdates or phone numbers. If it’s difficult to keep track of all your passwords, consider using a password manager (more on this below).

  4. Two-factor authentication (or two-step login)
Two-factor authentication (2FA) is an extra security measure that protects your online accounts. By enabling 2FA, your account requires not only a username and password but also an additional form of identification—such as a code sent to your phone or generated by an app like Authy. This makes it much harder for a hacker to access your accounts, even if they obtain your password.

  5. Password manager
A password manager is a highly useful tool that helps you create and store strong passwords for all your online accounts. A password manager works like a secure digital keychain, where you only need to remember one master password, and all your other passwords are automatically filled and saved in the system. Most password managers also offer synchronization across your devices, so you have your passwords on hand, whether on a phone, tablet, or computer. Reliable password managers include LastPass, 1Password, and Bitwarden. They ensure that your passwords are encrypted and protected, while also generating unique, strong passwords for you. This prevents you from reusing passwords or creating weak ones that hackers can easily guess.

  6. Discuss security in your association
Digital security should also be a topic of discussion in associations and groups where data and personal information are handled. Make digital security a point on the agenda for your meetings so you can discuss how everyone can feel secure. Review the association’s security procedures and exchange experiences on how to improve your practices. The more aware you are of cybersecurity as a group, the better you can protect yourselves from potential threats.

By following these tips, you can significantly improve your digital security and reduce the risk of falling victim to online scams and hacking. Remember, your online security is just as important as your physical security, and with the right tools and precautions, you can safely navigate the internet.
